| During the process of labor, vaginal exams are performed by medical professionals to evaluate progression. This is an exam done by tactile assessment of the cervix. As labor continues, progress is recorded in centimeters' dilation. Since this is a blind exam for the practitioner, assessment is done by memory and recall of the distance between the forefinger and the middle fingers against the inner rim of the cervix.
The Pocket Dilation Guide is a measuring tool that is used after a cervical exam to assess accuracy of what the examiner is feeling. The tool is made of flat, flexible plastic divided into concentric circles spaced 1 centimeter apart.
